What is urology?
The medical and surgical specialty that deals with the urinary tract in men and women and with the male genital system.
Urology is a medical and surgical specialty that deals with diseases of the male and female urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, retroperitoneum, bladder, urethra) and of the male genital system (prostate, seminal vesicles, penis, testicles).
- Kidneys
- Ureters
- Bladder
- Prostate (men only)
- Urethra
Andrology focuses specifically on the male genital system and on problems related to male sexuality and fertility.
Not just for men
People often think of the urologist as a doctor for men only. That is not the case: urinary incontinence, recurrent cystitis, stones, and kidney and bladder cancers affect women too.
What it deals with
- voiding disorders and urinary incontinence
- benign enlargement of the prostate
- urinary tract stones
- infections and inflammation of the bladder, prostate and urinary tract
- cancers of the kidney, upper urinary tract, bladder, prostate, testicle and penis
- sexual dysfunction and male infertility
- malformations of the urinary and genital tract
