He is a general urologist with a special interest in functional urology (male and female urinary incontinence, pelvic floor disorders and bladder outlet obstruction), reconstructive surgery (urinary diversion and pelvic floor surgery) and uro-oncological surgery, both open and robot-assisted laparoscopic.
He is particularly interested in the urological applications of evidence-based medicine, quality control and continuing professional development. He is an advocate of teaching non-technical skills in urological surgery.
His surgical experience covers every area of open, endoscopic and robot-assisted laparoscopic urology. He has performed thousands of major oncological and non-oncological urological operations.
He also completed full training in paediatric urology and, while working in Modena, started and coordinated the local kidney transplant programme.
Since 1987 he has developed a programme of orthotopic urinary diversion (the ‘Padovana ileal bladder’, vescica ileale padovana) after radical cystectomy, performing more than a thousand operations.
In April 2005 he started his experience in robotic urological surgery: radical prostatectomy, pelvic lymphadenectomy, nephron-sparing surgery for tumours, radical cystectomy with intracorporeal urinary diversion, and pyeloureteral and ureterovesical reconstructive surgery.
